My new friend…Chia Seeds!

Chia, Chia, Chia!

I love Chia seeds! I started adding green smoothies into my daily routine and was looking to give them a little extra boost. That’s when I cam across Chia seeds. I had never heard of them before and when I asked my husband about them he told me that as a child in Mexico they used to drink them in a drink called “bate” or “chia fresca” all the time when they were in season. In Spanish they are called “semillas de chan/chian” alson know as “Salvia hispanica.”

The nutrition facts (from the package):

  • 5 g Fiber
  • 3 g Protein
  • 2.5 g Omega-3 Per Serving
  • 60 Calories per tablespoon serving

There are a number of reasons why adding chai seeds to your diet can benefit your health. They are full of anitoxidents, protein and fiber. They help cut cravings, keep you fuller longer, give you energy, balance blood sugar and a whole lot more. Don’t they just sound amazing! I think so, which is why they are my new healthy-living friend 🙂

I purchased mine at Whole Foods for $11.99 but they are many places you can buy them. You can actually purchase them online for cheaper. I’ve seen the same brand and size bag online for $6.99.

Here’s an example of one of my ‘Green Smoothies’

  • 1 cup Spinach
  • 1/2 cup Cucumber
  • 1/2 banana (for sweetness)
  • 1 cup mixed berries (frozen)
  • 1/2 tablespoon Chia Seeds
  • 2 cups water

Blend it all together and you’re done! How easy is that? I love putting cucumber into my smoothies. I was a little weary at first. But once I tried it, I loved it. The cucumber gives the smoothie a refreshing sweetness that I love. I now have cucumber in every smoothie I make. Yum!

When I add the Chia seeds to my smoothies you can’t really taste them. They do have a very mild nutty flavor but again I don’t notice it. I leave my Chia seeds whole instead of grinding them. To me they just ‘feel’ like the seeds from strawberries when you blend them into the smoothie.

So what do you think about Chia seeds? Have I peeked your interest? I hope so! They are a great addition to my diet and I hope to yours as well!

Happy blending 😉
